For gold, we start with the live spot price per troy ounce, divide by 31.1 for a per-gram price, then multiply by your item's karat purity — 41.7% for 10k, 58.3% for 14k, 75% for 18k — and its weight on our scale. Jewelry and scrap gold are paid at a rate that varies by item, explained up front, and standard bullion gold coins bring 90% of the live spot price. Watches, certified diamonds, designer pieces, and collectible coins are appraised individually, since they're often worth far more than their metal content.
Is the appraisal private? I'd rather not discuss what I'm selling in a crowded shop.
Yes. High-value sales are handled one-on-one at the counter — your pieces, your appraiser, no audience — and we're happy to walk through each item's testing and valuation quietly and without hurry. Nothing obligates you to sell: many McLean sellers come in simply to learn what an inherited watch or an estate piece is worth, and either decision is fine with us.
Should I sell an inherited estate piece as gold, or is it worth more intact?
Bring it in before anyone melts anything. Estate jewelry from McLean homes — older signed pieces, handmade settings, important stones — is frequently worth more intact than as scrap, and we quote the higher of the two values. We check hallmarks, maker's marks, and stone quality first, and only price by weight if the piece genuinely carries no premium.
